How to Care for Color-Treated Hair

Coloring your hair can be a wonderful way to express yourself, but it also requires special care to maintain both the color and the health of your hair. Here's everything you need to know about keeping your colored hair looking its best.

Wait Before You Wash

After coloring your hair, wait at least 48-72 hours before washing it. This gives the color time to fully set and helps it last longer. When you do wash, use lukewarm or cool water—hot water opens the hair cuticle and allows color to escape.

Invest in Color-Safe Products

Not all shampoos are created equal. Color-treated hair needs sulfate-free formulas that clean gently without stripping away color. Look for products specifically designed for colored hair, and consider a color-depositing conditioner to refresh your shade between salon visits.

Deep Condition Regularly

Color processing can leave hair dry and brittle. Weekly deep conditioning treatments help restore moisture and keep your hair soft and manageable. Consider using a bonding treatment to repair any damage from the coloring process.

Protect from Heat

Heat styling can fade color quickly. Always use a heat protectant spray before using hot tools, and try to minimize heat exposure when possible. Air drying or using low heat settings can help preserve your color.

Shield from the Sun

Just like your skin, your hair can be damaged by UV rays. The sun can fade color and dry out your hair. Wear a hat or use products with UV protection when spending time outdoors.

Touch Up Roots Carefully

As your hair grows, you'll need to address root growth. For the best results, have your stylist touch up your roots rather than re-coloring all of your hair. Over-processing can lead to damage and uneven color.
